Teaching Contrastive Linguistics for MT

چکیده
We discuss a framework for teaching contrastive translation-oriented linguistics to students of machine translation. The framework embodies a classification of crosslinguistic differences and a demonstration of how the neutralization of such differences in abstract representations can make transfer modules simpler. We illustrate by means of examples from a range of languages, and then discuss a proposal for linguistic typology to which our system can be fruitfully related.1

The corpus approach: a common way forward for Contrastive Linguistics and Translation Studies?
In this introductory chapter, Granger traces the development of Contrastive Linguistics and Translation Studies over the last decades to the present day, focusing on the role of the computer corpus in giving new impetus to each field and bringing them closer together. She discusses the different types of monolingual and multilingual corpora being used in CL and TS research, proposing at the sam...

متن کاملContrastive Analysis, Error Analysis, Interlanguage
The main idea of contrastive analysis, as propounded by Robert Lado in his book Linguistics Across Cultures (1957), was that it is possible to identify the areas of difficulty a particular foreign language will present for native speakers of another language by systematically comparing the two languages and cultures. Where the two languages and cultures are similar, learning difficulties will n...
